Pro-Choice Except When It's Not the Right Choice

There's a prenatal condition "congenital adrenal hyperplasia" that causes ambiguous genitalia. There's also a pill that can prevent this from happening. What the condition does is masculinize female genitalia, so the baby's gender can be indeterminate. The pill aligns the hormones in the fetus (aka "viable tissue mass" for Liberals), to correct the condition in the 1 in 15,000 cases in the US.

One would think this would be a good thing. What could be wrong with correcting the defect in an enzyme called 21-hydroxylase, that would bring a healthy baby into the world? If this defect isn't detected and fixed, the baby could get seriously ill because of salt loss through the urine. There's also a deficiency of the hormone cortisol, affecting the heart, and an  increase in androgens from the adrenal glands.

Bring in the homosexual activists. It turns out the the prenatal treatment for this condition may have the side effect of turning potential gays and lesbians into full fledged heteros. National Center for Lesbian Rights, Advocates for Informed Choice and some other groups along with some doctors say we shouldn't be letting people mess with gender orientation in the womb. I suppose that even if the baby could be really sick without the treatment, or be physically deformed, or have to undergo extremely painful genital correction procedures after birth, is of little to no consequence. We need more gay people, even if it's outside the natural order of things. For my Liberal friends, that means a man and a man, or a woman and a woman cannot produce offspring naturally. Only a male and a female can do that, thus the term, 'natural order of things'.  Leftist gays and lesbians think parents may use this to adjust girls to be feminine and boys to be masculine.

There's now a big ethical debate in the medical community, and some rules of use are being rewritten. Of course gays and lesbians want legislation to make the procedure illegal, or at least make it damned near impossible for parents to make a choice. Then again, the parents could kill the prenatal tissue mass, and that would be okay.
