Up here in the Northern part of Wyoming we just recovered from a Historic event --- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.
FYI:
Obama did not come.
FEMA did nothing.
No one howled for the government.
No one blamed the government.
No one even uttered an expletive on TV.
Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.
Our Mayor's did not blame Obama or anyone else.
Our Governor did not blame Obama or anyone else either.
CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or even report on this category 5 snow storm.
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.
No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.
No one looted.
Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.
Nobody expected the government to do anything either...
No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.
No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.
Nope, we just melted the snow for water.
Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.
The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.
Local restaurants made food, and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snow bound families.
Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.
We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.
We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".
We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.
Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

Mothers' Day
Today is Mother's Day. Among the 10 Commandments is the only command with a promise: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12). President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation in 1914 proclaiming Mother's Day a national holiday. Then again, we don't need a holiday to express our appreciation to moms everywhere. May God bless each and every mother. We wouldn't be without them.

Lavarse Sus Manos
One of my favorite bars in Pacific Beach/San Diego was Lavas Sus Manos. Turns out there's lots of ways to say 'wash your hands' in Spanish. In the bathrooms where I work there are recently posted papers on the doors that have instructions how to wash one's hands. First of all, people won't see it after the first glance, and nobody will read it. It did get me thinking about soap though.
The ancient Greeks and Romans didn't use soap. They preferred slathering their hair and skin with gloopy oils. Ahhhh, the joy of massaging pig fat into your hair. It must have been a wonderful experience. The oil they put on their skin they scrapped off, taking away a little bit of dirt. It turns out the oil and soap have many of the same ingredients; they're mostly composed of fatty oils. The earliest recorded soap usage is about five thousand years ago, and the sapindus tree (also known as soapberry or soapnut) was used before that. The source of the actual recipe for the first soap used is unknown.
Here's the recipe. Take some ashes and pour water through them until you get lye water. Lye water is made alkaline by the addition of potassium hydroxide. You put an egg in the solution to test if it's ready; if the egg floats you're good to go. You then add fat to it. Animal fat was used a lot, but olive oil is better. Start mixing the ashes and fat; doesn't make any difference if this process is done hot or cold. The chemical reaction is called saponification. This is just the molecules rearranging themselves as they change from oil and alkali to a form of sugar call glycerol and the final ingredient, soap. These get separated. This process sometimes happens naturally. There's been cases where it's happened to buried corpses. It's just because of the way the soil, worms and bacteria mix. Just thought I'd share.
Soaps today use plant oils such as palm or olive, instead of animal fats. A few extra ingredients are added so we smell nice. Sometime scouring agents like pumice are added to clean away dead skin cells. The reason soap cleans is because of the chemical reaction; long and complicated having to do with how the potassium and salts and water and...you get the picture.
There you have it, the oily story. Now if we can just get some people that don't use it after....

New Cabinet Post? Secretary of Sports
"WASHINGTON (AP) — A group that studies sports in society is urging the Obama administration to step up the federal government’s role in athletics, possibly with a Cabinet-level post.
Sport in Society, based at Northeastern University in Boston, says the enhanced government role could serve several important goals. It says the U.S. could encourage more youth participation, increase access for women and the handicapped, and promote healthier lifestyles.
According to the group’s proposal, made today, most countries already have a minister or secretary of sport. Sport in Society says the government could create a “Secretary of Sport and Culture,” establish a special adviser, or increase funding for existing programs."
Sports are such a capitalist success, such a show of individual attainment and promotion by merit, it makes sense the Statist administration wants to control it. The stated goals are not what the Statists desire, it's misdirection so they have time to gain control. Enough people buy into government control of everything, or are not paying attention because it doesn't affect them directly that Obama and his fellow Statists may be able to pull this off. They now control banks, insurance companies, auto companies, the press and Hollywood...which all used to be free of the government. I hadn't thought of it before, but sports is one of the last businesses to take control of.

The Audacity of Unawareness
Barack Obama, through his spokesman, claimed today that he was unaware of the tax day tea parties. Granted, the MSM has done a good job in suppressing any sort of coverage ahead of time (and the little coverage they did provide was derisive at best). But, how out of touch is the Community Organizer in Chief, really?
This much.
He was unaware that he was attending a church (for 20 years) with a racist pastor who hates America .
He was unaware that his family was friends with a domestic terrorist, and that he started his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist.
He was unaware that he had invested in two speculative companies backed by some of his top donors right after taking office in 2005.
He was unaware that his own aunt was living in the United States illegally.
He was unaware that his own brother lives on just pennies a day in a hut in Kenya.
He was unaware of the AIG bonuses that he and his administration approved and signed into a bill.
He was unaware that the man he nominated to be his Secretary of Commerce was under investigation in a bribery scandal.
He was unaware that the man he nominated to be his Secretary of Health and Human Services was a tax cheat.
He was unaware that the man he nominated to be his Secretary of the Treasury was a tax cheat.
He was unaware that the man he nominated to be the U.S. Trade Representative was a tax cheat.
He was unaware that the woman he nominated to be his Chief Performance Officer was a tax cheat.
He was unaware that the man he nominated to be the Number Two at the Environmental Protection Agency was under investigation for mismanaging $25 million in EPA grants.

Deep Thoughts for People Who Take Life Too Seriously

Condoleezza Rice Meets With Some Students
I especially approve the the written sentiment at the end. Nearly all of the time Statists become vile and insulting instead of being civil by discussing and listening.
Tribute to Jack Kemp
Jack Kemp died of cancer yesterday. I'm deeply saddened by this. He was one of the most influential leaders in economics and reforming the Republican Party beginning in the 1970's. He educated Reagan, Gingrinch, and what became known as the "Young Turks" that eventually were elected to power in Congress in 1994 after Democrats had ruled there uncontested for forty years. He got the leadership of the Republican party to advocate for and implement 'supply side economics'. It was and is a concept derided by the MSM and Democrats; in it's simplist form it states that the money you and I earn belongs to us, not the government, and we should keep it (low taxes). If you value hard work, initiative and liberty you understand and appreciate this concept. When it's applied, the wealth of the nation, built upon growing personal wealth increases, alot. For me, he moved economics out of the realm of theory to application. He was one of the early thinkers and politicians that had a profound influence on me during my transition from Statist to Conservative/Libertarian.
Kemp was an NFL quaterback for the Chargers for two years and led the Bills to two AFL Championships. He was MVP one year and co-founded the AFL Players Association. He served NY as a congressman for nine years. During that time was when he built his coalition to wrest power from the liberal elite northeast country club set that had been running the GOP. He may be one of the most influential (and most unknown by the general public) politicians and applied economists of the twentieth century.

Statism ( Beginning Now, I'll Be Using This Word Instead of Liberal or Liberalism)
Statism (or Etatism) is a term that may refer to any (or all) of the following:
Government having a major role in the direction of the economy, both through state-owned enterprises and indirectly through the central planning of overall economy.
The "concentration of economic controls and planning in the hands of a highly centralized government."
The Facist concept of statism which holds that "basic concept that sovereignty is vested not in the people but in the national state, and that all individuals and associations exist only to enhance the power, the prestige, and the well-being of the state. The fascist concept of statism repudiates individualism and exalts the nation as an organic body headed by the Supreme Leader and nurtured by unity, force, and discipline."

From the Back Lot
GE/NBC threw all their resources behind getting Obama elected. They have been the most aggressive with their 'green' program. Including that stupid embarrassing Sunday night football show they did without lights or something. Everyone but Oberman must have been hugely embarrassed. So what's up with a news (hack hack cough cough) station/program doing something like this so blatantly? GE stock has dropped from fifty something bucks a share when Immelt took over to about fourteen dollars a share now. He still has a job. It all has to do with the green of being green. GE is lobbying to get bailout money. GE is pushing for cap and trade. Think your utility bills are high now? Wait until the government charges the utility companies whatever they want to meet cap and trade requirements. This carbon tax will be passed on to you. Can you say triple bill? GE also has huge investments in windmill technology and the manufacture of them. GE is using its support of Obama and the Dems through the use of NBC/MSNBC news to influence politics to get gigantic government contracts. Immelt does that successfully, he saves GE and NBC, and as corrupt and despicable as it is....
The other back lot story is the US Government, under the direction of our Dear Leader, is buying common stock in major corporations. The government is set to control 51 percent of GM, and along with the unions', read government, ownership, majority ownership belongs to the government. The new Chrysler deal gives the unions', read government, control of 55 percent ownership, through common stock. The government is buying common stock here too, but I'm unclear how much.
Do you think this just happened accidentally? Obama is a socialist, is following Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, and his purpose is to take over business and nationalize it all.
Anyone want to show me in the Constitution where it says the government can use taxpayer money to buy businesses and run them? WTF???? How much more of our money and liberty need to be stolen by the government, I don't care which party, before the American people wake up? Good Grief.

My Personal Swine Flu Experience
In 1976 there was a potential swine flu pandemic and President Ford authorized that all Americans should get the shot. One soldier had died; the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic in America began with soldiers, and the idea was to avoid that again. About 40 million Americans got inoculated. The problem was, the side effects; Guillian-Barre syndrome, which is a paralyzing nerve disease. The inoculations were stopped because about five hundred people got this syndrome and thirty died from it.
I had just joined the Navy when this had happened, and all military personnel were ordered to get the shot. I had quarterdeck watch the night I got the shot, and was feeling a little light headed when I reported for watch. I had been on the quarterdeck for a while, and I started to feel really bad. The officer of the deck was turned away from me when I collapsed on the ladder leading down to the deck. Just at that time another officer came around the corner and I remember his distant voice saying, "Stand up when you're on duty Seaman". I pulled myself up by the rail and the officer of the deck turned and walked over to me. I remember us talking for a bit, and the officer saying I was relieved from watch, to hit my rack. I did, and went into convulsions for the next few hours and then passed out. No one thought anything of this. I didn't. I didn't realize till later I could have died from this.

Interesting and Brave Novel and Other Books
I've finished reading "Keeping Faith" by Jodi Picoult. This will be the first of many of her novels I'll be reading this summer. (I like to read novels in the summer to lighten it up. Nonfiction mostly in the non summer months.) It involves a seven year old girl, secular Jewish mother, and secular dad. Something happens and the girl gets stigmata, the sick gets healed and a lot of other miracles take place. This is great speculative fiction. How do the courts react, the press, religious leaders, and the people personally involved? I loved this novel and am looking forward to reading more of Picoult's books.

I sent that copy on to a friend of his, so bought my own today. Revolutionary, and if you want a truly different perspective on what's going on, check it out.
I also picked up today "A Whole New Mind 'Why right-Brainers Will Rule the Future'". I doubt it. The AR detail people have a tight grip on everything, and will fight to the death for what they perceive as control. As a right brained person living in a left brain world, I'll read this as an enjoyable fantasy.

Divers Thoughts on the News
Big in the news today is swine flu. Let's see, Obama hasn't named a CDC chief or a Surgeon General; health care is one of his highest priorities don't ya know. The MSM and Dems are blaming the Republicans for the outbreak here in the US because they voted against the TRILLION dollar omnibus bill which included pandemic preparations. Ummmm, how is disease prevention going to stimulate the financial sector? Just asking.
Driving home from church yesterday morning I was ruminating over what all the Leftists control. Mainstream media, movie and television industry, universities, House, Senate, Executive, and Judicial. All that and they cry because of Rush, Hannity, Levin and Fox News. Fox News, for those people that watch it know they have a bunch of Leftists on all the time. I watch or read the other MSM and it's all Leftists all the time.
Obama's first hundred days. MSM is yelling from the rooftops how much has been accomplished and how the prez is the smartest man on the planet (remember too that Clinton is the smartest woman on the planet, except for the misogyny thing the dems and Obama launched during the campaign). From where I sit, I see all the money in the "stimulus" package ineffective, misspent or lost. He traveled around alot, including earth day when he left a huge carbon footprint flying around burning thousands of gallons of fuel. I don't see any accomplishments. Well, maybe he's increased divisivess, along with ammo and gun sales. Good grief.
